Following back to back victories last weekend, Spalding Ladies 1st team were up for the challenge at Glen Park against an experienced Wisbech side. An inspiring team talk saw the ladies venture out on a cold day and from the start they took control of the game.
From a dynamic push-back taken by Amy Wells the game started with instant pressure in the oppositions D, her now signature move. Consistent defending from the Wisbech side denied Spalding multiple times with shots on goal. The games saw intense pressure from Spalding with numerous attacks which sent Wisbech into a frenzy. A solo effort from Ellie Pybus 12 minutes into the game, saw her take the ball from deep in the Spalding half and power through several Wisbech players, arriving into the D where she unleashed a devastating shot that found its home low past the keepers far post. 1-0 Spalding.
Confidence was now high in the home team, with great play from midfield allowing Spalding’s forwards to offer wave after wave of attacks on goal. A great series of interplay by the young trio of forwards Ellie Holland, Evie Maltby saw Jess Ball make Spalding’s second goal in the 18th minute. The Wisbech goalie was still reeling only to see a passage of play allowing Jess Ball once again to rocket the ball home for her second just a minute later.
Wisbech only managed to have three attacks on the goal in the first half and the Spalding defence lead by Captain Jodie Victoria saw her wingmen Charlotte Morris, Rachel Perkins and Ellie Pybus thwart any attempt to get near returning keeper Donna Chester-O'neill who had a very ‘quiet day in the office’.
The last short corner of the half saw the Spalding players flood the D to be rewarded with another goal on the whistle by Amy Wells. Half time score, 4-0.
A determined start by Wisbech early in the second half was constantly broken down and neutralised by a confident Spalding side. Spalding’s ever reliable mid-field made up of Karen Louise Timby, Zoe Smith Moore and Stephanie Wilson broke down play and allowed Spalding attackers to remain high up in the oppositions half.
A very busy Wisbech keeper saw her again collecting the ball from the back of the net after Ellie Holland scored another skilful goal making it 5-0.
Spalding’s domination and versatility saw players experiencing different parts of the field confidently due to their high press. They are looking forward to their next match against local team away at Long Sutton. Final score 5-0, MOM - Ellie Pybus, scorers - Ellie Pybus, Jess Ball (2), Amy Wells and Ellie Holland.
